to Register for the 40-hour Basic Medical Interpreter Course
The requirements to participate and be able to successfully complete the 40-hour Basic Medical Interpreter Course are adapted from the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters to prepare the interpreter to become certified in the future. Age – 18 years
General Education
Minimum education: High School Diploma. A High School or GED diploma are acceptable proofs of general education.
Language Proficiency in both working languages
To fulfill another requirement of the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters and also to ensure the quality of the interpreter training, it is mandatory that you comply preferably before start of the training with the proof of Oral Proficiency in English and your second working language.
You can obtain your Oral Proficiency in English through one of the following:Bachelor, Masters, PHD, or any other degree from any US institution of higher education.Graduation from any High School from an English language country or from an American School abroadOne of the following tests:
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): 570+ on paper; 230+ on computer version; 90+ on iBT.
ELPT (English Language Proficiency Test): 950+
MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery) 80+
ECPE (Examination for the Certificate of Proficiency in English): PASS
FCE (First Certificate in English, Level 3): A
CAE (Certificate in Advanced English, Level 4): B
CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English, Level 5): B
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) 7.0+
Oral proficiency in other language(s) -- referred to as “L2”
One of the following:Bachelor, Masters, PhD, or any other degree from an institution of higher education where L2 is spokenGraduation from a high school of the country where L2 is spoken15+ semester credit hours of L2ACTFL Oral Exams (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages): 3.5 + /Advanced Mid Level

To ensure the quality of the training and its graduates, you can register for the training before obtaining your language proficiency results at your own risk. The Certificate of Completion can be only given out to you after you have submitted proof of sufficient oral proficiency in both languages.
